Final Project

The final project was a group project from me, Atli Tóbíasson and Máni Sakamoto Kolbeinsson. We designed a toy car inspired by the beetle and cybertruck, a cyberbeetle. CNC-ing a positive mold from vax to make a negative mold from silicone and finally cast the final car from epoxy.

I took part in the idea stage but then Máni mate some scetches and a first draft of the design. I took that design, removed all overhangs, added draft angles and just overall made it more manufacturable. Then I took that design and used it to design the wax mold that Atli then took to make a toolpath. With the toolpath in hand (or on a usb drive i guess) we went to FabLab in FB to CNC mill the part out of wax, every once in a while dusting off and collecting the cuttings for reuse.

When that finished we cleaned it up, mixed up some silicone and pored it in both halfs, waited 72 hours and then our negative mold was ready for removal. A small flat head screvdrifer helped with that process.

We then clamped together the two parts of the mold, mixed up a 5 minute epoxy and pored it in with a homemade post it note funnel, it took a couple tries but we were able to get some decent resaults and after we got the hang of it it was easy to semi mass produce.

I was in charge of the group trello board and keeping track of things, made the video, helped with the presentation and of course documented my part of the process but you can read more about that and find our design files at Atli's page about the project.
